Creating appealing and practical storage for your home closets can easily be done by adding closet shelves and they are not hard to install.
You first need to look at what you intend to store on the shelves. Will it be lighter material like sweaters or blankets? You are you looking to store heavier items? For lighter items, wire shelving works out fine. If you are looking for heavier item storage, you will want to look at installing heavier gauge metal or wooden shelves. You will want to check the manufacture suggested weight limits before making your choice.
You will find that there different type of shelving options and they do not have to be flat. If you are looking at organizing your shoes, you can get shelves designed at an angle specifically just for shoes.

This will give you the maximum strength for your storage regardless of the items weight. Failure to mount the shelving to the studs can cause the shelving to pull free from the wall, possibly causing extensive damage to your walls and shelving units. You can pick up stud finders at any hardware store for under $20. Well worth the investment.
If you are not able to locate the studs or if the studs do not match-up with the shelving design, you will then want to look at different drywall screws. There are multiple different designs and you will want to make sure you get the right type to support the weight that you expect to be putting on the shelves.
